FairPrice vs Sheng Siong vs Cold Storage: An Honest Side-by-Side

FairPrice vs Sheng Siong vs Cold Storage: An Honest Side-by-Side

You know the question. You're standing in the kitchen, list in hand, and you have to pick: FairPrice, Sheng Siong, or Cold Storage. Each one has a fan club. Each one has at least one Reddit thread defending it like a national treasure. None of them are universally cheapest.

So we did the boring thing. We compared 50 everyday items across all three, in the same week, in the same neighbourhood. Here's what actually came out of it.

The headline result

No supermarket won across the board. Not even close.

  • Sheng Siong was cheapest on 23 of 50 items.
  • FairPrice was cheapest on 19 of 50 items.
  • Cold Storage was cheapest on 8 of 50 items.

If you only shopped at the "cheapest" store (Sheng Siong) for the whole list, you'd save about 9% versus the most expensive. But if you split the list optimally across all three, you'd save 19%. That's the loyalty tax we keep talking about.

Where each store actually wins

Sheng Siong: fresh produce and meat. Pork, chicken, leafy greens, eggs. They restock aggressively and price-cut hard near closing. If you eat meat regularly, this is where most of your weekly meat budget should land. Honestly, even our Cold Storage devotees admitted it.

FairPrice: house-brand pantry staples and rice. Their own-label rice, oil, sauces, canned tuna, and biscuits are consistently the lowest priced. Plus their Linkpoints actually do something if you stack them right.

Cold Storage: imported brands and specialty items. Italian pasta, French butter, Australian beef cuts, the cereals nobody else carries. You'll lose on bananas, but you'll find your jamón. Worth it for the niche stuff. Just don't do your weekly run there unless you enjoy paying tuition fees.

A few specific items that surprised us

  • Greek yoghurt (1kg) — Cold Storage was cheapest. We didn't expect that.
  • House-brand white rice (5kg) — FairPrice by a clear margin.
  • Chicken thigh (per kg) — Sheng Siong, and not even close.
  • Lay's potato chips (large) — basically identical across all three. So just buy wherever you are.
  • Cooking oil (2L) — FairPrice on promo, otherwise Sheng Siong.

The lesson isn't "memorise this list." The lesson is that prices move every week. The store that wins on chicken this week might not next week. The promo cycles are real.

How to actually use this

We're not telling you to drive to three supermarkets every Saturday. That's how marriages end.

What does work: pick a primary store (the one closest to you), and a secondary store you swing past once or twice a month for the items it's clearly better on. Then use a price-comparison tool to spot when the third store has a promo so good it's worth a detour.

This is the entire point of Tokku. You type or paste your shopping list, and Tokku tells you, item by item, where it's cheapest right now across all the major SG supermarkets — including RedMart, Guardian, and Watsons. If three of your items are 30% off at a store you weren't planning to visit, you'll know. If they're not, you stay loyal to your usual store. Done.

Stop arguing about which supermarket is "the best." None of them are. The cheapest shop is the one split between them.

If you're planning the actual weekly route, read why one mum shops at 3 supermarkets a week, keep the Aunty Method grocery hacks nearby, and compare cooking oil and pantry staple prices.

→ Compare prices on Tokku — real-time across FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Cold Storage, RedMart, Guardian, and Watsons.
